Dia de Todos los Santos

Happy All Saints Day (Dia de Todos los Santos) to our friends in Guatemala. One of my favorite things in Guatemala are these amazing, giant kites made for the festival on November 1st in Santiago de Sacatepequez, Guatemala. They are HUGE and wildly colorful...one day I'll make it down for this festival! (images from here)

Tinkuy de Tejedores

Tinkuy de Tejedores is a gathering of weavers from Guatemala, Navajo Nation, Bolivia, Peru, Argentina, and Mexico that takes place in the sacred valley of Peru near Cusco. I can't imagine what an amazing experience it would be to see all of this incredible talent in one place. And the clothes! The traditional clothing of these indigenous men and women is unbelievable. The traditional Bolivian dress in the bottom photo is my favorite. So chic! (all photos from Hand/Eye Magazine)

Natural Dyes

Natural dyes can create amazing colors and not just browns and natural cotton as you may think. Bright orange, peach, vibrant purple, greys, browns and indigos are a few options. The photo above is a seed from the Achiote shrub...it creates a gorgeous orange. The bottom photo is naturally dyed yarn from a weaving cooperative around Lake Atitlan, Guatemala. More and more artisan cooperatives in Guatemala are learning eco-friendly techniques to better market themselves in the international market.

Proud Mary is working on a new naturally dyed fabric as we write...stay tuned!!

Vibrant Tombs

These are a few images from our second trip to Guatemala. They are from a really beautiful cemetery near San Antonio Palopo. I love the way the Guatemalans use color to celebrate their lost loved ones.
